NSWIS Open Water swimmer Ky Hurst has won the prestigious Open Water swimmer of the year at last night’s Telstra Swimmer of the Year Awards.
This award recognises the effort Hurst has made in the open water competition, in what has been a year to remember for him.
Hurst has always had the dream of making to the Olympic Games and after being a champion in Surf Lifesaving, he switched to pool swimming to chase his dream.
When the Open Water event was granted a place at the 2008 Olympic Games, Hurst saw his calling. He beat Grant Hackett at the World Championships to claim a spot at the Olympics.
Along with Hurst winning the award, his coach Tracey Menzies won the Open Water Coach of the Year award, for all the work she has done with him.
Other NSWIS winners on the night were Peter Leek, Rick Pendleton and Sophie Edington who were all part of the International All Star Team.
