Legge hits the record books

July 8 2008

NSWIS Jessica Legge got off to a great start at the 2008 Trans Tasman Swimming Series, stealing the show tonight with brilliant meet record performances in both the 100 metres breaststroke (1:08.23) and 200 metres individual medley (2:13.61).

Legge was happy with her performance and that of her Australia gold team mates who took out the day one point score with 114 points ahead of arch rivals Australia Green on 112 and New Zealand (82).

“I haven’t raced too much short course recently and I really do enjoy the turns and using my strength but I still didn’t think I’d swim that fast,” Legge said.

“This is my third year on the Trans Tasman now and I am really enjoying using my experience in a different role to help the younger swimmers and this is the perfect start to the week for our gold team.”

The Australia Green team weren’t to be outdone in the record stakes with Kenneth To (EAP) celebrating his 16th birthday in style clocking a new meet record in the 200 metre event to blaze away the field in a time of 2:14.66.

The excitement was just as strong in the women’s 800 metres freestyle with 15-year-old Jessica Ashwood (EAP) (8:44.34) hanging on for the Australia Green win ahead of 13-year-old Australia Gold talent in Mikkayla Maselli-Sheridan (8:46.21).
