NSWIS Diver Loudy Wiggins

Under the guidance of NSWIS Head Coach Chava Sobrino, Loudy Wiggins, (nee Tourky, born 7th July 1979) became the first Australian woman to win an Olympic medal. Born in Israel, Tourky came to Australia with her family at the age of three and took up diving aged 12. She competed at her first Olympic Games in Atlanta, 1996 and in 2000 won bronze in the 10m synchronised platform.

In 2001, Tourky won bronze in the 10m Platform at the World Championships and became the third Australian ever to win a diving medal since the Championships began in 1973. In the same year she won bronze at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka and was named Female Australian Diver of the Year.

Two years later Tourky became the first diver to win gold at three FINA Diving Grand Prix. She won the 10m platform and the 10m synchronised in Canada, America and Mexico and by the end of the Grand Prix circuit was ranked number one in the world. She also won gold medals at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Tourky has been an NSWIS Scholarship holder from the inception of the NSWIS in 1996 until 2005. She was a finalist for the NSWIS Athlete of the Year Award in 1998 and 2003 and winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2003.
