NSWIS Athlete Amy Winters

Amy Winters (born 19th March 1978) specialised in the 100m and 200m events in the T46 division for athletes with a single arm amputee. Throughout her career Winters held two world records and one Australian record before the age of 23. 
 
Winters was born with her disability and has been running since the age of nine. She first represented Australia when she was 16 at the 1994 IPC World Championships where she won three silver medals. Two years later she won gold in the 200m at her first Paralympics in Atlanta in a new world record time. In 1998 she won double gold in her specialty events at the IPC World Championships.
 
In Sydney, at the Paralympics in front of a home crowd, she defended her 200m crown, won the 100m and picked up a bronze in the 400m. In 2004, Winters returned to the Paralympics and for the third consecutive time, won the 200m title and defended her 100m title. Winters has won seven individual gold sprint titles at her three Paralympics and two IPC World Championships.
 
Winters was an AWD NSWIS Scholarship holder in the Track and Field program in 2001/2002 and in 2005/2006. She was a finalist for the 2005 NSWIS Female Athlete of the Year Award.
